One of the bigger businesses online isn’t just the websites you go to but the names of the websites themselves. Who would think that a web address would mean just as much as the content on the site. It doesn’t make any sense in the real world except for the address of the White House. But 222 Filmore Lane in some non-descript city means nothing to you, only to the person who lives inside. The only other analogy where it is applicable is the idea of designer names. A kids backpack might mean more to a kid because it has his favorite cartoon character on it or is made by a particular designer than a generic store brand backpack.
Domain names are the web addresses used to get you to a site. Companies will shell out big money to obtain the rights to a specific domain name. Let’s say your business was making pies and you had a business called Pie Guys and that business was really successful. You might want a website called PieGuys.com. This makes perfect sense, but what sometimes happens is someone who anticipates the success of your business buys the rights to the domain name and then you are forced to pay them for it. Most places will charge you a nominal fee for it but there are individuals who will buy up a website just to make you pay through the nose for it.
How successful your product is online is directly related to the ease of remembering the name. If you owned a place called Marks Pizza, you would want the website to be Markspizza.com and not TheBestPizzainEasternMichigan.com. While it might be the slogan of your pizza place it is not the first place a customer will look online. Domain names and their rights are big business around the world.
