Many companies already have cameras in place in their businesses, mainly for security reasons. If you consider having a camera up, also consider using your own network to view the footage. Many companies have used the internet for their networks requiring a log in user name and password. The technology is available for you to view the camera footage live from your computer or some smart phones by setting your cameras up to record to your online network. Check with your state for laws regarding video in businesses.

Computer Use

You can set the computers up to limit or track what your employees do on the computer. Uninstall any games on the computers if you don’t want your employees playing solitaire. If the games are there, the employees are probably going to play them. You can also block web access to certain internet sites such as common email providers like Yahoo and Hotmail as well as social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. If you feel you want to give employees freedom to view all of the internet because you may have a few you trust or they may need it to complete their job duties, you can also track computer behavior. If you own the computer and have consent of users using the computer, you can purchase and install tracking software, many of which are designed for parental controls, such as Spytech SpyAgent 7.1.

Audio

For the extremely concerned, you can consider recording audio in the workplace to check out what your employees are saying to each other and to customers. Be careful going this route. Many states have laws prohibiting audio recording for privacy issues.

So you have made the decision to create a domain name! Great! There are just a few things to consider when choosing the right domain name. First of all, a domain name should be very specific to your company and what services you provide. Think of what people would be searching for in order to find your company. Let’s say for example that you own a carpet cleaning business. A person’s house floods and they are looking for carpet cleaning. It is safe to assume that they would be searching the web using words like ‘carpet’ and ‘cleaning’. Therefore, to better connect with your customers, you probably would want to include something descriptive about your business in your domain name.

Althought your domain name needs to be specific it does not need to be boring. In today’s world we are constantly looking for a form of entertainment and domain names are no different. Your domain should stand out and be eye catching. Rather than just simple name your domain ‘carpet cleaning’, think of a way to make the services sound interesting. People are much more likely to show interest in your company if your company is interesting to them.

With that being said, you can go overborad with your domain name. If your name is so criptive that the name makes no sense, you have gone to far. While the name should in interesting and eye catching, the name should not be so wacky as to confuse a potential customer. If a customer has to pause to think about why your company is listed under their search-your name is to weird.

Choosing a domain name is a lot like choosing a child’s name. The name should fitting and unique but it should not be wacky. Ultimately, remember that your domain name will be leading people to your company.

Names are Important

The other day my son was writing a research paper on government for his History class. He inadvertently typed in www.whitehouse.net instead of www.whitehouse.gov. According to whitehouse.net George W. Bush is still our president and Spanish will officially be named our second language within the week. What he was looking for was good solid information on the workings of the U.S. government. What he got was a website that was full of lies and misinformation.

While researching the price of roller blades online I typed in www.dicks.com hoping to be taken to the official website of Dicks Sporting Goods. I will leave it up to your imagination as to the type of website I was actually taken to. Names are important. Shakespeare’s famous words “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” do not apply to the worldwide web.

Sometimes choosing a name for your new website can be just as emotional and time consuming as choosing a name for your newborn baby. Add an “S” remove a hyphen and you can have a totally different website. Should the websitesite for your new restaurant be joesbarandgrill.com, joesbar&grill.com or simply joes.com? Which website will make it easier for your potential customers to find you? Choosing a domain name can be like walking through a minefield. The possibilities can seem endless.

To maximize hits a domain name should roll off the tongue, be easy to remember and have a fairly standard spelling. If you are selling flowers roses.com would probably be a good name for your website. Rozes.com would not. Very few people would remember that you spell your roses rozes. Even fewer would remember to pass that information along to their friends when recommending your site. So when choosing a domain name for your website choose wisely because Names are Important.
