Picking a catchy, easy to remember, easy to type domain name is the most important step to creating a successful website that
ranks high on Google searches. There are many things to think about, however, when considering what to name your website.
The most important thing to remember is to name your domain name after your website. This might seem like a no-brainer to many, but consider this: You are starting a website that sells used cars. There are innumerable websites that sell used cars with domain names like usedcars.com or sellusedcars.com. It would be tempting to name your website something very popular, generic, and descriptive like usedcars.com but have your actual domain name read randysusedcarsite.com. It is important that your domain and website name match because when people think of your website they immediately think of your URL name. Giving them a URL different from your site name only serves to confuse people.
If you find that your domain name is already taken try renaming your website to fit your domain name. If you are already tied to specific name branding or logo you still have a few options. First, you can try changing up the domain name slightly. Say you have a website called cardshop.com. Try putting “the” on the beginning of the URL so your domain name reads thecardshop.com. If this doesn’t work you can contact the person who owns the domain name and see if you can buy out the name from them. It might be best, especially when you are starting out, to buy a domain name first and then build your website and brand identity around that.
Should your domain name be long or short? That is a question that has been debated endlessly. The pro to having a short domain name is that it is easy to remember and doesn’t lend itself to mistakes when you type it in. Long domain names on the other hand are generally not already owned and are often more unique than most short domain names.
When deciding on a great domain name the choice is up to you.
