Every month, they showcase military related bloggers, and they often ask questions where certain comments can be featured in their magazine. In addition to inviting members to attend their webinars, they have asked members for opinions on their advertising campaigns and requested assistance to help lobby bills that directly affect the way they do business. One of their posts that received over 600 likes, “In today’s economy, how many companies give money back to their customers? Should a little computerized tablet be replacing my beloved books? First of all, this thing is not so easy to use. I’m pretty computer savvy and it took me five days to get it completely up and running. Thank God Barnes and Noble provides live technical support. I love the little touch screen. It is all fair and good to stay connected with old friends and relatives living far away. Everyone is curious to see whatever became of the prom queen, the class valedictorian and the captain of the football time. But how much of our privacy are we sacrificing in order to satisfy our curiousity?

Most of us try to be very careful about what we post on the internet. The problem is that sometimes what seems like the most trivial thing to you can be completely misconstrued by someone else. Criminals and predators alike can use any tiny piece of information that they’ve gleened about you from the internet to their advantage. Employers can use the internet to discriminate against you. It is illegal for a potential employer to ask you if you have children but it is not illegal for that employer to view their smiling faces on Facebook. Are these sites really worth the risk?

Thankfully the internet is becoming an ever increasing option for people who are seeking high quality professional development classes at bargain basement prices. The internet has a quite a large range of options. Teachers in my district have been able to attend professional development webinars on topics as varied as classroom management, mandated state testing and suicide prevention. Each one of these webinars was attended from the comfort of ones’ own home and on ones’ own time. A short test was given at the end of each webinar and if you passed you were able to print out your own certificate from your own computer. Webinars such as these are both money savers for the district and time savers for the teachers.

PBS.org has its’ own online teaching community where teachers can bounce ideas off on another and offer each other support. They also host live chats. Most of us start out using simple, easy to remember things, as our passwords. We use birthdays, anniversaries, or our pets names as our passwords. It’s long been predicted in movies and in literature that eventually the government or businesses would become so involved in regular citizens’ lives that it would be almost like having a big brother watching them.

A few weeks ago I was suffering from a urinary tract infection. For example, a major cosmetics company was late to register their name under a .com, and a cybersquatter setup a website with their name that actually sent Internet users to a competitor’s product. Early cybersquatting seemed like a smart way to make money, since many squatters held out for millions of dollars. But as domain names were snatched up, more and more squatters started holding out for tens of millions of dollars, or, at a minimum, amounts way too large for the companies to pay. At first, courts had a hard time dealing with lawsuits that resulted from cybersquatting, since the Internet was an example of a technological development outpacing the law. However, since new international laws have been arranged that help registered businesses retain or gain control of their associated domain names, payoffs to cybersquatters, and lawsuits against them, have dropped dramatically.

Cybersquatting against Individuals

Since a domain name is very likely to come up as a search engine result, cybersquatters have been purchasing the names of individuals they don’t even know, for example: ‘Abby Smith’ could have a domain of ‘abbysmith.tv.’ If someone types in her name on a search engine, it could draw the user straight to the domain of http://abbysmith.tv, where the cybersquatter could have a website advertising its sale. In malicious cases, cybersquatters have purchased the domain name correlating with the name of a politician, or celebrity, and then used the domain name to make a website filled with gossip and nasty rumors about that person. When contacted, the cybersquatter asks for a large amount of money – essentially holding the person’s web presence for ransom.

WWW = WHAT WHAT WHAT?

.com, .net, .org, .tv, .com.au, .com.pl, .net.fr, or .org.nz. If you’re reading these words, you are reading them on a website that probably has one of these dot-whatevers in the website name. These are Domain Names, and they are part of the Domain Name System (DNS) system that administers the Internet. The three biggest top-level domain names are .com, .net, and .org. Anything after those, usually the two-letter initials, such as .ca or .jp, are country codes, the latter being for Japan, and the former for Canada. The United States has no country code – kind of a reward for inventing the Internet and the DNS – so all generic top-level DNS addresses are, by default, American.

Getting ‘yourname.org’

If you want your own website, such as ‘ourfamilyname-dot-com,’ it’s easy. You have to go to a domain name registry, and you purchase the domain name, if it’s not already taken, that is. If your name is Fred Smith, it’s perfectly legal for a guy named Igor Oblomov to own the domain name of ‘fredsmith.com.’ Since domain names are in high demand, a lot of them are already purchased by entrepreneurs hopeful that you really, really want your own domain name. You know, want it enough so that you shell out big bucks for it. Since most common household names are already taken, you might have to get creative, and maybe add your middle name, or make it more customizable to your situation, like: ‘myfamilynameincolorodo.com.’

Once you have a site with .com or .net, you then have to make web content. This requires programming in a langage called Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML. You Can get a Website with ICANN

Way back in 1998, the United States Government had its hands full with its runaway DARPA invention, the Internet, so a private, non-profit group was formed to to take over things like domain name assignments and managing roots servers – the core of the Internet. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was this new entity. Since then, the process for getting an internet domain (such as www.google.com) has involved requesting the name from ICANN. You might use a domain registry service with an online storefront, but the ICANN is the actual body that will verify availability of the request, and issue it if it hasn’t been previously registered.

Top-Level Domain Names

Domain names that end in .com, .net, and .org are the three major top-level types. The extensions .edu, .mil, and .gov are not available through ICANN without special registration, since they are for educational institutions (harvard.edu), the US Military, and the US Government. The United States doesn’t need a country code designator, but all other countries do. A subsidiary of ICANN, called the Country Code Names Supporting Organization deals with the policy of country codes, which are two-letter designations after the top-level domain. For example, .com.au is a commerical site in Australia, or .tv for Tuvalu. However, when someone is requesting a website name, for example: ‘myname.tv,’ they don’t actually have to be in Tuvalu, or be a citizen or organization that deals with the country.

You specifically need a domain name if you want to host your own website with your own web address. So if you want ‘mrjim1974.com,’ you will have to request that name through a domain registration service that deals with ICANN. If the name’s available, you pay the domain registration, which then forwards some of the money to ICANN, and that domain is legally owned by you. However, you also have to pay an annual fee to maintain your domain. The necessity of an annual fee helps keep people from cybersquatting on valued domain names, and helps keep the Internet’s content dynamic.

How Much Can a Typo Cost You?

Everyone who’s ever used a keyboard has made a typo – hitting the ‘y’ key instead of the ‘u,’ for example. Users of devices such as mobiles make twenty times as many typos as keyboard users, since the keys and screen are smaller. When people are typing URLs – website addresses – their typos actually cost the website owners, since a typo can send an unwitting consumer to a competitor’s website, and the website the user intended to visit never got the sale. This side effect of typos created while searching for web addresses even spawned a mini-industry called ‘typosquatting.’

Typosquatting is a practice wherein a person registers a domain name that correlates with a likely typo for a popular product or website. For example, if a website is called ‘hotboots,’ a typosquatter could buy the domain name of ‘hotbots,’ and instead of making a website, he would just have paid links to other websites competing with the ‘hotboots’ website. He could take a few variations on typos of hotboots. Or, if hotboots was a .com website, he could take the .net domain, and possibly get a good stream of users seeking the .com, and never getting it.

Typosquatting for Profit

Typosquatting can be profitable in the sense that someone is reaping the rewards of millions of slight mistakes committed by people seeking a commodity or product that has spent millions of dollars getting their attention. Google has recently estimated that typos cost online vendors half a billion dollars a year. Typosquatters sometimes hold their typo domain names for ransom, only selling them when a large sum is offered by the owners of the original website. They also make money linking to competitors websites. However, typosquatting has moved out of the gray zone of quasi-legality, and there are now legal precedents and laws that deal with typosquatting cases. Typosquatting is considered a form of cybersquatting, and it is addressed in the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act of 1999. This law has helped settle numerous lawsuits, however, many other still go unresolved.

The Necessity of Being on the Internet
