Things to Avoid in Website Design

Avoid Pop-Up Advertising

Nobody really likes playing the X-Game of trying to close pop-ups when they are delved into some sort of fun or research. In fact, many will automatically leave a site without giving it a chance if the moment they get to the site, a few pop-ups occurs.

Slow Processing

Too many of the neat things such as photographs, large files, flash, music, videos, etc. can slow down a page. The internet is supposed to be high speed, and many people have little patience for page loading times. Even more frustrating is when the page has so much information it causes the computer to freeze up.

Too Many Words

It takes longer to read information on a computer screen than it does in print. If you have a lot of information you are trying to communicate, be to the point and chunk information as necessary. Bullets are an awesome concept.

Words You Cannot See

Believe it or not, many websites exist where the words are written in a similar color as the background. The content is not camouflage. Watch for putting words over a photograph that has sharp contrasting colors. In addition, sometimes words don’t show up correctly in spry assets and drop down menus, so make sure they are functioning correctly and viewable in java and with java disabled.

Too many Ads

Advertisements through third parties usually re-load ever so often, and in that period, there is usually a delay with the ability to scroll. Not fun for a reader sitting on your site for a long period of time. In fact, if you get them to stick around long enough for ads to re-load, then don’t let the advertisements scare them away.

Disorganization

People go to a site with a specific goal in mind. It frustrates them when they can’t find what they are looking for within seconds.

Common Website Design Customs

Users of the internet come to expect a certain consistency among websites that not only do they find convenient, but many websites find that the following customs help improve site traffic.

Share Feature

Nothing gets the word out about your site and provides instant links better than word-of-mouth, and the ease of the share feature makes it really easy for people to link your site to their friends on their social networking sites like Facebook. In addition, a Facebook like button is nice to have as well.

Search

Sometimes people search engines like Google for something specific, and instead of taking them to the specific content they are searching, Google will link directly to your home page. If users cannot find what they are looking for in a matter of seconds, they will move on to the next search listing. Providing a site search makes it easy for them to find specific information within your site.

Comments

People love to air their opinions on the web. Sometimes you even see comments in articles that simply say, “I love it,” or “Doesn’t really matter to me.” Some people actually sign up to the site with a user-name and password receiving notices from third parties to their email just to be able to say, “It doesn’t really matter to me.”

Above the Fold

Nobody likes the never ending scroll down page. Not only do they often take longer to load, but for some reason, most users would rather click a “page 2” link than to scroll down too far. For that reason, many sites keep their design to a size that would relatively fit a computer screen. If they go larger, usually they don’t go more than double, and they keep the most important information at the top, such as the “shop” link.

Cool Things Organizations say on their Facebook Wall

In addition to individual profiles, Facebook offers fan pages for organizations. So what do these people write on their walls?

For a small television show on the Travel Channel manned by three hot men, their own cameras, and a bunch of ghosts, Ghost Adventures have almost a million fans on their Facebook page. They provide links, you tube videos, polls, pictures, and questions. One post that gained quite a few likes and comments asked people to click like if they are excited for the next episode, and during the episode’s airing, they asked people what they thought. Check them out at http://www.facebook.com/#!/GhostAdventures

USAA, a no-bail out bank, offers many financial products to service members and veterans. With some of the most innovative uses for content in their wall posts, USAA offers “Fun Friday Movie Quotes” and links to websites offering product-related resources. Every month, they showcase military related bloggers, and they often ask questions where certain comments can be featured in their magazine. In addition to inviting members to attend their webinars, they have asked members for opinions on their advertising campaigns and requested assistance to help lobby bills that directly affect the way they do business. One of their posts that received over 600 likes, “In today’s economy, how many companies give money back to their customers? USAA did—to the tune of $594 million in the form of distributions and dividends beginning this week.” Check them out at http://www.facebook.com/#!/USAA

Moms Who Drink and Swear engages her audience with candid, creative writing. A popular posting says, “…They [my toilets] are white and bleachy clean and ready for puke. I’m proud of this.” While it’s a place for parents to all vent to each other in the most profane way possible about the “joys” of parenting, it is also a vehicle the creator of the page uses to advertise her blog, blogs of friends, and charitable causes. Marketing with Facebook

Facebook offers a few different ways for websites to market their site. One question to ask, “What is the purpose?” Some sites exist to enhance branding like to remind people they exist and entice them to think of that company next time they are at the store. Some sites, however, have the goal of reaching certain click-through rates and direct shopping.

Advertisements

The most obvious way to advertise your company on Facebook, advertisements offer an affordable way for any organization to get their name out there. Facebook offers two methods of charging: impressions vs. clicks. You can have the ad link to your Facebook page or to an external site. They also have a daily budget, and you can decide the dates of a campaign. The ads usually have 3 components: the headline, the copy, and the picture.

Facebook Pages

Facebook has profiles for individuals and pages for organizations and professional uses. Free. The biggest difference between them is the way you make friends. In profiles, you have to accept or deny the friend requests. On pages, they click like, and done.

You can use a Facebook page for various reasons. Popular statements that people “like” such as “Looking for your car keys for an hour to find them in your pocket,” are everywhere. Facebook now has all your activities and interests as a list of “like” pages, so many pages exist such as, “Cleaning my house,” and “Soccer.” Then of course, people are more than welcome to like “your name” or “your company’s name.”

In addition to the “like” feature, once liked, your posts show up on their news feed. Many companies are already advertising sales, providing teasers, and making their mission more interactive with videos and links.

Share Feature

On your external site, you can provide a share feature that allows people to post your link directly to their Facebook profile for all their friends to see in their news feed.

Free Online Design Tools

The internet offers quite a bit of free art to use in design, but not all art is free. Always look for licensing agreements to see if it is available for commercial and personal use.

Images in Public Domain

Photographs and images available in public domain are the safest option to go with images. Anything created by the government or where copyright has expired is in public domain. Keep in mind different countries have different laws for copyright expiration. A great website to find images in public domain is WikiMedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page).

Fonts

Not only can you find some free fonts to use for your letters, but you can also find some free of dingbat images to use as a one color clip art or to color for clip art. Dafont (http://www.dafont.com) offers free fonts.

Photoshop Brushes

If you use Adobe Photoshop, you can also download free brushes to use in your designs employing a simple click to insert images onto your canvas. My Photoshop Brushes (http://myphotoshopbrushes.com/brushes) also offers patterns, gradients, and shapes.

Clip-Art

Many websites offer clip-art free for personal use, and some offer commercial free clip-art, and most offer links to websites of links for free clip art. Sometimes the easiest way to get clip art of quality to stretch to large files is through a dingbat font; however, some of the sites with clip-art can be useful in design. Hassle Free Clip-art (http://www.hasslefreeclipart.com/) offers a decent selection “with no strings attached.”

Tutorials

Do you see an effect being used as a trend in graphic design, like the sunburst, and have a sudden urge to play with or use the effect? You can experiment in your software at trying to create the effect, but Photoshop and Illustrator tutorials are all over the web to make neat effects like the sunburst or different techniques with inking artwork.

What are Domain Names?

Anyone who owns a business knows that advertising is the best way to increase interest in a company. One of the best ways to increase the visibility of your company is to provide information about your company online. In today’s technological world, a large amount of information is conveyed over the internet. Rather than use a phone book to see what restaurants are in a certain location a person needs to simply browse the web. By putting information about your company on the web, you are better able to compete with other businesses.

A great way to increase advertising and interest in your company is to create a domain name. Domain names are a names that identify Internet Protocol (IP) or websites. By creating a domain name you are esencially creating a website. By creating a domain name you helping people searching for your services find you.

Domain names are something that are very specific. They lead to specific website addresses, meaning that the domain name that you create should be specific to the services that your company provides.

The right to use a domain name is determined by domain name registers. After you have created a domain name no one else can use the name. In this way, domain name registering is much like registering you company’s name. Once you have created your domain name you will have to make sure that you keep your registration up to date. Much like you would with your company’s name. There is a fee attached to registering your domain name, but the pay back from the visibility that you will have online is worth the amount.

Creating a domain name and making your company visible online is a great way to increase advertising and interest in your company. The domain name will be unique to your company making it easier for people to find you and your services.

Domain Names: Creating the Right Name

So you have made the decision to create a domain name! Great! There are just a few things to consider when choosing the right domain name. First of all, a domain name should be very specific to your company and what services you provide. Think of what people would be searching for in order to find your company. Let’s say for example that you own a carpet cleaning business. A person’s house floods and they are looking for carpet cleaning. It is safe to assume that they would be searching the web using words like ‘carpet’ and ‘cleaning’. Therefore, to better connect with your customers, you probably would want to include something descriptive about your business in your domain name.

Althought your domain name needs to be specific it does not need to be boring. In today’s world we are constantly looking for a form of entertainment and domain names are no different. Your domain should stand out and be eye catching. Rather than just simple name your domain ‘carpet cleaning’, think of a way to make the services sound interesting. People are much more likely to show interest in your company if your company is interesting to them.

With that being said, you can go overborad with your domain name. If your name is so criptive that the name makes no sense, you have gone to far. While the name should in interesting and eye catching, the name should not be so wacky as to confuse a potential customer. If a customer has to pause to think about why your company is listed under their search-your name is to weird.

Choosing a domain name is a lot like choosing a child’s name. The name should fitting and unique but it should not be wacky. Ultimately, remember that your domain name will be leading people to your company.

What is Web Hosting and Who is Doing It?

You may have heard the words ‘web hosting’ thrown around. Chance are though, you have no idea what they mean. If you are like a good percentage of the individuals out there, you do not pause to think about how websites are created or how websites find their way to the web. Web hosting has a lot to do with it.

Web hosting is a type of internet hosting service that allows individuals or companies to create their own website using the World Wide Web. Web hosts provide space on a server that they lease or own to provide companies with a website and internet connectivity.

There are many different types of web hosting. The most popular and well known are free web hosting, which is offered by companies with limited services; shared web hosting, where a website is placed on the same server as many other websites; and clustered hosting, which had multiple servers hosting the same type or information or content. Clustered hosting is usually used for websites that are in high demand.

If you are interested in using web hosting there are some things to consider. First, you need to consider the agreement between you and the server. You need to look at the database service software, scripting software, and operating systems. Often, web hosting is offered as part of a general internet access plan. The services that you will need for your company will help you determine which web host you will work with. For instance, if your company needs email for your domain name, multimedia, and streaming media you will probably not be interested in a web host that only provides limited services. Depending on your need, prices for web hosting vary from free to hundreds of dollars a year. You will need to consider what services are important and find a web host that works to meet those needs.

Names are Important

The other day my son was writing a research paper on government for his History class. He inadvertently typed in www.whitehouse.net instead of www.whitehouse.gov. According to whitehouse.net George W. Bush is still our president and Spanish will officially be named our second language within the week. What he was looking for was good solid information on the workings of the U.S. government. What he got was a website that was full of lies and misinformation.

While researching the price of roller blades online I typed in www.dicks.com hoping to be taken to the official website of Dicks Sporting Goods. I will leave it up to your imagination as to the type of website I was actually taken to. Names are important. Shakespeare’s famous words “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” do not apply to the worldwide web.

Sometimes choosing a name for your new website can be just as emotional and time consuming as choosing a name for your newborn baby. Add an “S” remove a hyphen and you can have a totally different website. Should the websitesite for your new restaurant be joesbarandgrill.com, joesbar&grill.com or simply joes.com? Which website will make it easier for your potential customers to find you? Choosing a domain name can be like walking through a minefield. The possibilities can seem endless.

To maximize hits a domain name should roll off the tongue, be easy to remember and have a fairly standard spelling. If you are selling flowers roses.com would probably be a good name for your website. Rozes.com would not. Very few people would remember that you spell your roses rozes. Even fewer would remember to pass that information along to their friends when recommending your site. So when choosing a domain name for your website choose wisely because Names are Important.

Is it Possible to be Too Digital?

I am an avid reader. I devour book after book on a weekly basis. Like Robot #5 in the 1986 movie Short Circuit, I constantly require more input. I love my Iphone. It has made it possible to text message at every stop light and even while in the bathroom. My preteen son is not the only one in my household who loves Youtube. As much as I love technology I’m not so sure about this new Nook.

Should a little computerized tablet be replacing my beloved books? First of all, this thing is not so easy to use. I’m pretty computer savvy and it took me five days to get it completely up and running. Thank God Barnes and Noble provides live technical support. I love the little touch screen. It makes for a nifty toy but can it replace the smell of a book or feel of turning a page? I don’t think so.

These large corporations have a good marketing scheme going. Download a book for $10, maybe share it with one other person and then be done with it. Actual books can be passed around from person to person. Wear and tear is a books’ badge of honor. It means that it was well read and well loved. Dog eared pages are not a bad thing. Passing down my childhood favorites to my children gave me great joy. Even my cynical high school students fought over who was going to get to use the copy of MacBeth I read in high school.

No one can stop the hands of time. The world moves forward and progress is made every day. Not all progress is good though. Although we have more gadgets and more things designed to make our lives easier our lives are more hectic than ever. I for one don’t want more gadgets. I want my books.
